Campus Connection: Response from Savannah B. Basham

“The aspect of veterinary practice that has surprised me the most throughout my time in veterinary school has been the use of technology in agriculture and medicine. Many women in the past have been discouraged from pursuing large animal medicine because the work was “too physical” or “too dangerous” for a woman. Improvement in technology like proper chute systems and arms-free reproductive ultrasound scanning have made a veterinarian’s job more efficient and less dangerous. I look forward to using technology in bovine practice as new graduate to improve record keeping and efficiency during herdwork.”
While veterinary students generally enter their studies with a clear vision of the profession and the determination to achieve their academic and professional goals, they also encounter some eye-opening realities, some positive and some negative.
So, with that in mind here is the question our panel of veterinary students and recent DVM graduates address this month:
What aspect(s) of veterinary practice has surprised you most, either positively or negatively, as you learn more about your career choice?
