The 6th Annual American Association Bovine Practitioners Recent Graduate Conference, targeted for those veterinarians who have graduated between 2015 and 2022, will take place Feb. 10-11, 2023, in Knoxville, Tenn. Registration for this in-person-only conference is now open at http://aabp.org/recent_grad/ (you must log-in to register).

This year’s theme is “Competence to Confidence”. “When you graduate from vet school, you feel on top of the world, invincible,” explains Program Chair Dr. Tommy Ware. “This is swiftly replaced over a few weeks or months with the thought of ‘I know nothing...’, or at least that's how my experience went. The 2023 conference is here to help with this issue. We've all been there, but the back-to-basics CE offered will bring on the competence one needs to reach ultimate confidence in yourself and your practice.” Keynote speaker Dr. Eric Rooker will address the theme of Competence to Confidence.

“The AABP Recent Graduate Conference is one of the newer initiatives that the organization has developed to address the needs of our recently graduated colleagues consistent with our primary mission to provide relevant continuing education to our members,” says AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich. “This conference is developed by members who are recent graduates and they know best what they want for a CE meeting. I am thankful to our board, the program committee and our sponsors for making this conference possible. The feedback each year is tremendous, and because the sessions are recorded, they are available to all members after the conference.”

This year’s conference offers 15.5 hours of CE in beef, dairy, clinical skills, practice management and small ruminant topics (see the full schedule at http://aabp.org/Recent_Grad/schedule.asp). “Previous Recent Grad conferences have done an excellent job at bringing forth great practical CE for bovine practitioners,” Ware notes. “However, listening to attendee reviews and understanding that the vast majority of attendees are mixed-animal practitioners, we decided to add a little flair to the conference. We allotted a full morning for some top-notch small ruminant CE to allow attendees to make as much impact as possible with the time that they have for continuing education. In addition, we understand that as new graduates, practice ownership has likely crossed minds before, therefore, we added in some sessions on practice ownership and acquisition.”

The conference also offers four preconference seminars available on Feb. 9 (see them at https://aabp.org/Recent_Grad/preconference.asp), including Practice Management, Starting from Scratch or Buy In/Buy Out, Reproductive Ultrasound, Thoracic Ultrasound and Thinking Through and Practicing Lameness Treatment Protocols. The hands-on ultrasound and lameness seminars will be conducted at the University of Tennessee dairy farm, and the lameness seminar at the University of Tennessee Center for Veterinary Medicine. Exhibitors will also be present at the conference to showcase products and services.

“Knoxville is going to be a great venue for this conference,” Ware says. “It offers us the ability to provide outstanding, hands-on preconference seminars and also some amazing lectures from a few leading bovine clinicians from the University of Tennessee. And, with Knoxville being a college town, the night-life for making new friends and creating a network of support will be nothing short of excellent.”

Conference attendance is limited to current AABP members, so make sure your dues are current when you register. Visit http://aabp.org/Recent_Grad/default.asp to see an overview, schedule and register for the conference – you must be logged onto the website to register.
