FDA Addresses Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationships, Prescribing/Dispensing Animal Drugs and Telemedicine

The agency has developed an online Q&A to answer questions about veterinarians’ federal requirements with regard to these topic areas.

The FDA has received questions from “interested parties about federal requirements related to a veterinarian’s role in dispensing prescription animal drugs” and to the establishment of a veterinarian-client-patient relationship in the course of practice.

The agency has developed a Q&A to address veterinarians’ obligations under federal law.

Some of the questions FDA addresses in the Q&A are:
1. What is a veterinarian’s role in dispensing prescription animal drugs?

2. What is meant by professional supervision and oversight?

3. What is the veterinarian’s role in extralabel use of products?
