The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval of 5 new prescription medications that are labeled for use in dairy animals since the beginning of the year.
All but one of the drugs are labeled for non-lactating animals only, and all require a prescription from a licensed veterinarian. The 5 drugs are:
- MGA + Deracin (melengestrol acetate Type A medicated article and chlortetracycline Type A medicated article) -- Combination therapy for suppression of estrus (heat) and treatment of bacterial enteritis caused by Escherichia coli and bacterial pneumonia caused by Pasteurella multocida organisms susceptible to chlortetracycline, and for suppression of estrus and control of bacterial pneumonia associated with shipping fever complex caused by Pasteurella spp. in replacement dairy heifers less than 20 months of age. - MoxiSolv Injection (moxidectin) -- For the treatment and control of internal and external parasites of non-lactating dairy cattle. From Bimeda Animal Health Ltd.
- Flunine (flunixin meglumine injection) -- For the control of pyrexia associated with bovine respiratory disease, endotoxemia and acute bovine mastitis. It is also indicated for the control of inflammation in endotoxemia. Labeled for all dairy cattle, excluding dry cows. From Cronus Pharma Specialities India Private Ltd.
- CocciAid for Calves (amprolium) -- An aid in the treatment and prevention of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria bovis and E. zurnii in dairy calves. From Aurora Pharmaceutical, Inc.
- Pradalex (pradofloxacin) -- For the treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni and Mycoplasma bovis in cattle intended for breeding less than 1 year of age (replacement dairy heifers less than 1 year of age and dairy bulls less than 1 year of age). Not for use in cattle intended for breeding 1 year of age and older (replacement dairy heifers 1 year of age and older, dairy bulls 1 year of age and older, and dairy cows), dairy calves, or veal calves.
