Dr. Daryl Buss to Receive Billy E. Hooper Award for Distinguished Service

The 2022 Billy E. Hooper Award for Distinguished Service is being presented to Dr. Daryl D. Buss during the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) annual conference, slated for March 3-5.

The award is presented by the AAVMC to an individual whose leadership and vision has made a significant contribution to academic veterinary medicine and the veterinary profession.

“The AAVMC is proud to recognize outstanding individuals like Dr. Buss,” said Dr. Andrew T. Maccabe, AAVMC chief executive officer. “Their contributions inspire colleagues, provide a model for future generations of veterinarians and elevate the overall excellence of our member institutions.”

Dr. Buss’ more than 50-year career has included clinical practice, teaching, leadership of academic institutions and the AAVMC, and ultimately, editor-in-chief of the AAVMC Journal of Veterinary Medical Education.

He served for 17 years as the dean of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, where he was also a faculty member in the Department of Comparative Biosciences and continued to teach cardiovascular physiology, his specialty, to veterinary medical students.

Dr. Buss authored or co-authored 74 publications that substantially contributed to the body of knowledge in cardiology, and his research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. In addition to his many notable contributions to academia, he also served in various veterinary medicine professional organizations.
