We’ve all been in a similar situation before...
You are working on a project — whether it be working on fence on the farm or a home improvement project around the house — you go to find that trusty tool that you have relied on in the past and, you cannot find it anywhere. After searching everywhere, you head to the store to buy a replacement. While there are seemingly dozens of options to choose from, you can’t find the exact one you lost and are left trying to decide between the ones in-stock that day. While you will probably be able to get the job done with the newly purchased replacement tool, it’ll never be quite as good as the one you lost.
Hopefully, this doesn’t happen to you very often but, if you have been practicing veterinary medicine since before 2005, you may recall a similar situation happen with Pfizer’s (now Zoetis) Adspec® (spectinomycin sulfate) sterile solution. Originally gaining FDA approval in January of 1998, Adspec was a popular cattle anti-microbial used for the treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni. In 2005, manufacturing was discontinued, and the product disappeared, and you had to rely on alternative molecules to help you continue to get the job done.
Well, the good news is that the old tool is back! Bimeda Inc. recently gained FDA approval for SpectoGard® (spectinomycin sulfate) sterile solution, the first and only generic, bioequivalent to Adspec. SpectoGard sterile solution contains the same active ingredient, in the same concentration, dosage form, and route of administration as the pioneer product and has all of the same label claims.
“We are excited to provide veterinarians and producers an effective treatment option for the most common bacterial causes of BRD from a class of antimicrobials that hasn’t been used in many years. SpectoGard Sterile Solution is an aminocyclitol, which is closely related to the aminoglycosides except it doesn’t have the same potential side effects (such as nephrotoxicity) as the aminoglycosides do.” said Dr. Chris Thomsen, Senior Technical Services Veterinarian, Bimeda US.
Contact your animal health product provider today so that the next time you are looking for a tool to tackle BRD, you will have that old trusty tool (that’s been made new again) that you know will be able to get the job done.
