Does Removing the Cauterized Bud Change Disbudding Recovery?

A Cornell field study examined wound healing, pain sensitivity and growth following two approaches to cautery disbudding.

After cautery disbudding, you have the choice of leaving the cauterized tissue in place or removing it.

A new field study suggests that choice can influence the early wound environment, particularly wound discharge, but may not change the eventual course of healing.

Researchers at Cornell University compared two cautery disbudding techniques in 222 female Holstein calves. In one group, the cauterized horn bud was retained (BUD-IN). In the other, the cauterized bud was removed (BUD-OUT). All calves received meloxicam and a cornual nerve block with lidocaine, and researchers followed wound healing, pain sensitivity, calf health and growth for eight weeks.

The results provide a useful distinction for veterinarians: how a wound looks during the first few weeks does not necessarily predict how quickly it will ultimately heal.

Early Wound Discharge Differed

The clearest difference between the two techniques was wound discharge.

During the first four weeks, purulent discharge was substantially more common when the cauterized bud was retained. Purulent discharge was observed in 54.5% of BUD-IN wounds compared with 26.6% of BUD-OUT wounds. The odds of purulent discharge were 3.32 times higher in the BUD-IN group.

That finding raises an important question: What does that discharge actually represent?

It was not established that the purulent discharge represented an infection. Instead, researchers proposed that retaining the cauterized bud may leave more devitalized tissue or coagulative necrosis in the wound. That tissue could provide more opportunity for bacterial colonization or contamination, potentially explaining the higher frequency of discharge in the BUD-IN group.

The study documents a difference in the wound environment, but it does not establish that one group experienced more clinical infection.

Perhaps most importantly, the difference was temporary.

Different Early Wounds, Similar Healing

Despite the difference in early discharge, the researchers found no difference in time to complete wound healing between the two techniques.

Complete re-epithelialization began around week 4, with most wounds healed by week 6. By week 8, only 11 wounds, or 2.5%, remained incompletely healed. Statistical analysis showed no difference in healing time between BUD-IN and BUD-OUT calves.

That makes the study’s central finding less about choosing a “better” technique and more about understanding what happens during recovery.

Removing the cauterized bud appeared to alter the early appearance and environment of the wound, but that difference did not translate into faster overall healing.

Pain Sensitivity Increased With Time

The study also found no difference between techniques in mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT), a measure of sensitivity to mechanical pressure.

MNT increased over the eight-week study period in both groups, indicating reduced sensitivity over time. At week 1, mean MNT was 1.86 kgf for BUD-IN calves and 1.87 kgf for BUD-OUT calves. By week 8, values had increased to 4.04 and 4.09 kgf, respectively, with no significant treatment effect.

The finding should be interpreted within the conditions of the study. All calves received both meloxicam and a cornual nerve block, so the lack of a treatment difference applies to these two techniques under the analgesia protocol used in the trial.

The researchers also noted that MNT remained below baseline at week 8. They caution that MNT is only one measure of pain sensitivity and that behavioral or physiological measures could capture other dimensions of the calf’s experience.

No Difference in Growth

The technique also did not affect growth.

Calves gained approximately 822 g/day during the eight-week study, with no difference in average daily gain between BUD-IN and BUD-OUT calves. Body weight and calf health scores likewise did not differ meaningfully between groups.

Taken together, the findings point toward an early difference that did not appear to have measurable downstream consequences for the outcomes evaluated in this study.

What Is Happening in the Wound?

The difference in discharge may be the most interesting finding because it raises questions the study cannot fully answer.

The authors suggest that removing the cauterized bud could reduce the amount of devitalized tissue remaining in the wound. However, that proposed mechanism was not directly tested.

The researchers also point to another potential factor: cautery exposure in this study was approximately five to seven seconds per horn bud. That was shorter than exposure times reported in some previous studies. They speculate that shorter cautery application may produce less thermal tissue damage and coagulative necrosis, potentially influencing the wound environment.

That leaves several questions for future research. Does the amount of cautery-induced tissue damage influence discharge? Does the meaning of purulent discharge change depending on when it occurs? And would the same results be seen under different environmental conditions or management systems?

For now, this study adds another layer to understanding cautery disbudding recovery.

Removing the cauterized bud changed the wound during the early stages of recovery, particularly the frequency of purulent discharge. It did not, however, change the eventual healing time, pain sensitivity measured by MNT, or calf growth.
