There’s a new, first-of-its-kind, dairy product hitting store shelves this year. And it’s sure to resonate with consumers who are calorie-conscious.

Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) is launching Milk50 by DairyPure, a real dairy milk with only 50 calories per serving and 75% less sugar than fat-free skim milk. Available in original, chocolate, and vanilla, Milk50 provides a nutritious alternative for health-conscious consumers looking to cut calories and sugar without sacrificing taste or nutrition, according to a company press release.

“Milk50 is revolutionizing the dairy aisle by addressing the top concerns of today’s consumers—calories and sugar—while keeping all the benefits of real milk,” says Rachel Kyllo, Chief Marketing Officer of Dairy Brands at DFA. “Unlike plant-based alternatives, which often lack protein and key nutrients, Milk50 delivers superior nutrition in every sip.”

Each serving of Milk50 provides 9 grams of protein, 2-3 grams of sugar (depending on the variety), 20% of the Daily Value for calcium, and essential vitamins A and D. Unlike plant-based beverages, which vary widely in fortification, Milk50 maintains a consistent, natural nutrient profile without artificial flavors or colors.

“While plant-based alternatives have flooded the market, they simply can’t match dairy milk’s powerhouse of essential nutrients,” says Wall Street Journal best-selling cookbook author Toby Amidor, MS, RDN. “Milk50 is a game-changer for calorie-conscious consumers – it delivers everything people love about real milk’s taste but with fewer calories and less sugar. Consumers are finally realizing that swapping their dairy milk for almond or oat beverages means missing out on crucial protein and vital nutrients in their morning smoothies, breakfast cereals, and daily glasses of milk.”

According to DFA, Milk50 is made by using an advanced ultra-filtration method which removes sugar while preserving 9 grams of protein. With 75% of the sugar removed in Milk50, a touch of sweetness is added back to achieve an ideal taste profile.

The original and vanilla flavors contain allulose, a sweetener that has gained popularity in recent years because it has the taste and texture of sugar but with about 10% of the calories in sugar. Allulose is classified as a carbohydrate and research shows it does not raise blood sugar levels.

Milk50 was developed through a collaboration between DFA and Dairy Management Inc. Their 10-year partnership has focused on revitalizing the fluid milk category by introducing value-added innovations that align with evolving consumer preferences.

“Milk50 is a prime example of how the dairy checkoff works with industry leaders like DFA to drive innovation in fluid milk,” says Silvia Robles, vice president of partnership and growth platforms at DMI. “With its health-focused benefits and on-trend attributes, Milk50 is designed to meet the needs of today’s consumers while delivering value for dairy farmers.”

Milk50 will be available nationwide at Target stores and select West Coast retailers, including Walmart, Albertsons, and Stater Bros. Markets. It will be sold in 48-ounce plastic bottles in original, chocolate, and vanilla flavors, with a suggested retail price of $4.49.
