More than 72% of dairy farms now breed part of the herd to beef sires, putting dairy calves into the beef supply in numbers the industry can’t overlook. Those crossbred cattle now make up more than 20% of cattle entering U.S. feedlots.
A recent Farm Bureau Markets Intel report looks at how those calves perform once they reach the feedlot. With beef supplies tight, the report points to placement weight, health and feedlot performance as factors that can affect how much value carries through the supply chain.
The report highlights new research from Kansas State University using pen-level data from three commercial feedlot companies in Kansas and nearby states. Researchers compared beef-on-dairy cattle with traditional beef cattle placed at weights ranging from 400 to 900 lbs..
Lighter Cattle Show a Growth Advantage
Across the placement-weight range, beef-on-dairy cattle had greater average daily gain and lower predicted mortality than traditional beef cattle. They also tended to require more feed per lb. of gain as placement weight increased.
The advantage in daily gain was strongest among lighter cattle.
At a 400-lb. placement weight, beef-on-dairy cattle gained 0.70 lbs. more per day than traditional beef cattle. But as placement weight increased, the advantage narrowed. At 900 lbs., beef-on-dairy cattle actually had a 0.15-lb.-per-day disadvantage in daily gain compared with traditional beef cattle.
For feedlots, beef-on-dairy cattle may capture more of their growth advantage when they enter the feedlot at lighter weights.
Feed efficiency followed a similar pattern.
At 400 lbs., beef-on-dairy cattle converted feed at the same rate as traditional beef cattle. At 900 lbs., they required 0.32 more lbs. of feed per lb. of gain.
Mortality remained lower for beef-on-dairy cattle across the full 400- to 900-lb. placement range, although the advantage became smaller as placement weight increased. Researchers also found beef-on-dairy cattle did not show greater overall production risk than traditional beef cattle.
Timing Could Leave Money on the Table
The findings raise questions about how beef-on-dairy cattle move through the supply chain.
Beef-on-dairy cattle currently enter feedlots at about 650 lbs. on average and stay on feed roughly 70 days longer than traditional beef cattle. By the time they reach the feedlot, some of their early growth advantage may already have been captured by calf raisers or backgrounders.
Moving those cattle into feedlots at lighter weights could give feedlots more opportunity to capture the growth performance seen in the research. But making such a change would require coordination among dairy farms, calf raisers, backgrounders and feedlots.
Earlier placement also would move more days on feed and related costs to the feedlot, so the economics cannot be viewed from one part of the supply chain alone. Better coordination could help spread the value created by beef genetics across the people raising the animal.
A Bigger Role for Dairy Cattle
The timing of the research is important as the U.S. beef herd remains historically small.
The beef cow herd fell to 28.5 million head in July 2026, the lowest July inventory on record. Meanwhile, the dairy herd increased by 200,000 cows and dairy replacement heifers rose by 100,000 head. Cattle on feed also increased 2% from the previous year.
Beef-on-dairy cattle already account for roughly 20% of U.S. beef production, and the source material projects they could represent more than 25% in coming years as crossbreeding expands and cattle supplies remain tight.
For dairy farmers, what happens after the calf leaves the farm is becoming more important to the value of the breeding decision.
A crossbred calf may bring a stronger check than a traditional dairy calf, but the value of beef-on-dairy genetics ultimately depends on how that animal grows, stays healthy, converts feed and performs in the beef supply chain.
The Kansas research suggests placement weight is one piece of the puzzle. Beef-on-dairy cattle appear to have their strongest performance advantage when they enter the feedlot lighter, giving the industry another reason to look beyond the dairy gate when evaluating the value of beef-on-dairy breeding.
More research is still needed, particularly around how production decisions affect carcass quality and grading. But as dairy cattle fill a larger share of the beef supply, getting the timing right could help the industry capture more of the value those calves can bring.
