        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Kansas Phenomenon&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        If there is a gorilla in the room in this report, it is Kansas. The Sunflower State has officially become the epicenter of American dairy expansion. In March 2026, Kansas saw a staggering 25.4% increase in milk production compared to the same month last year.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;This growth is driven by a massive influx of cattle. Kansas cow numbers jumped from 187,000 head in March 2025 to 234,000 head in March 2026 — a net gain of 47,000 cows in a single year. This explosion suggests the state’s aggressive strategy to attract processing capacity and foster a pro-growth business climate is paying massive dividends. Large-scale operations are not just moving to Kansas; they are thriving there, leveraging the state’s access to feed and central logistics.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I almost always look at cow numbers first because that’s going to tell us a lot about short-to-medium-term prospects,” Phil Plourd, president of Ever.Ag Insights says. “For March, the U.S. herd increased 8,000 head month-on-month and 187,000 year-over-year to a new 30-plus year high. That says we’re going to have plenty of milk for a while. And, while performance varies from region to region and farm to farm, prospective margins seem decent enough to keep things rolling.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;This 30-year high in cow numbers indicates that despite the volatility of the global market, U.S. producers are betting on growth. However, that growth is highly concentrated.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;High Plains Powerhouses and Regional Shifts&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Kansas isn’t the only state in growth mode.         The report also highlights a stark contrast: as the High Plains boom, the Pacific Northwest and parts of the Southwest are in retreat. Washington saw a significant 5.8% drop in production, losing 15,000 cows over the past year as regulatory pressures and changing land use take their toll. New Mexico also faced a decline, with production falling 3.2% as its herd shrank by 9,000 head. Even traditional strongholds like Pennsylvania saw a dip, with production down 2.3% and a loss of 12,000 cows. These numbers tell a story of a national dairy industry that is not just growing, but migrating toward regions where modern, large-scale infrastructure can be built from the ground up.&lt;br&gt;

        It isn’t just about more hooves on the ground; it’s about the brilliance of modern management. Production per cow in the 24 major states averaged 2,133 lb. for March, 7 lb. higher than a year ago. This marriage of scale and efficiency has pushed the January-March quarterly production to 58.5 billion lb., up 2.9% from the same period last year.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As the industry moves into the second quarter of 2026, the data confirms a new reality.          (NWS) was last eradicated from the U.S. in the 1960s, the tools and infrastructure to deal with foreign animal disease have dramatically changed.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Dr. Justin Smith, Kansas animal health commissioner and state veterinarian, during the recent 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.asi.k-state.edu/events/cattlemens-day/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;Kansas State University Cattlemen’s Day&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
         gave an update on how Kansas and other states are preparing for NWS. The approach is designed to keep producers in business, keep cattle and products moving, and manage NWS in a way that protects both herds and markets.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He says the U.S. animal health officials along with USDA are planning a multistate, coordinated response that aims for consistency across state borders.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Smith summarizes the industry’s preparation to tackle NWS is like a three-legged stool. U.S. producers will be able to maintain business when NWS invades through surveillance, treatment and movement controls.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Surveillance: Eyes on Animals&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        The first leg of the stool is surveillance. He stresses early detection depends heavily on producers and veterinarians watching animals closely and reporting anything suspicious.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Smith emphasizes they would rather over investigate than miss a case.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We want to make sure that we err on the side of having to say no on many occasions, versus saying, ‘Yep, this is what we got.’ Eyes on animals is going to be key.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He was clear this should feel like partnership, not policing.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“They don’t want it to look like Big Brother coming over your shoulder,” he explains. “I hope we want to get this thing quickly.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Smith explains that once a positive premises is identified, surveillance becomes structured around zones. The infested premises sit at the center, surrounded by an infested zone, an adjacent surveillance zone and a broader fly surveillance area.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The infested zone is 12.4 miles in radius from the infested premises. In this zone, there will be frequent on‑animal checks for wounds and larvae, plus enhanced monitoring in surrounding zones using fly traps and animal observation. The adjacent surveillance zone is another 12.4 miles radius and then there will be a fly surveillance area — an 124-mile radius from the infested premises.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Smith says movements out of the infested zone will require visual inspection for wounds and systemic treatment, including a treatment window of three to 14 days before movement plus a documented certificate of veterinary inspection.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He says the current Kansas response plan aligns with USDA’s playbook and neighboring states’ plans while taking into account specific needs of the Kansas livestock industry.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He stresses the playbook will continue to evolve, and state-by-state implementation may vary, but he says the “zone approach” will be utilized by all states.&lt;br&gt;

We want to make sure that we’re utilizing these [products] responsibly. There’s not an unlimited supply out there, and so we want to make sure that it’s available for us when we do need it.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;On a positive premises, Smith says treatment will be mandatory and systematic.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“There will be a quarantine placed on that premises. We’re also going to require a certain level of treatment on that premises,” he explains.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;There will be protocols for daily mortality disposal, so carcasses don’t become breeding sites.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“The last thing you want to do is bury an animal that has larvae and has the ability to advance.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He says treatment is also tied to movement out of infested zones, with most animals needing prophylactic treatment before leaving.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Movement Controls: Targeted, Not Statewide Shutdowns&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        The third leg is movement control, designed to be precise rather than broad-brush. Smith stresses 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.drovers.com/news/new-world-screwworm-infestation-not-infection" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;NWS is an infestation, not an infection&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        , emphasizing it is not a systemic disease problem, but an infestation that still demands strong controls.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He says there will be movement restrictions if a premises falls into an infested region. To move animals out of that zone, there will be steps to follow but movement will not be completely shut down. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He explains some exceptions exist:&lt;br&gt;&lt;ol class="rte2-style-ol" id="rte-a45b2ec1-1d7e-11f1-a058-4f3607d2157a" start="1"&gt;&lt;li&gt;Animals moving directly to slaughter can go without pre‑movement treatment, but those animals have to be hanging on the rail within 72 hours.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Baby dairy calves must be treated but can move right away if treatment and navel care are documented.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;He says Kansas is also coordinating with neighboring states to create “synergistic” rules, especially for cattle from higher‑risk states such as Texas. Cattle entering Kansas from recognized infested zones will face inspection, treatment requirements and at least 14 days in drylot containment on arrival.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;NWS is Not a Food Safety Issue&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Smith reassures producers and consumers that NWS is not a meat safety threat.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“This is not a food safety issue,” he says. “If an animal is presented to slaughter, it has a screwworm wound then it has the ability to be trimmed. That carcass will not be condemned. There are no restrictions on any inspected product for food safety reasons.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Smith summarizes underpinning all three legs is a commitment to dynamic planning and continuity. He notes a revised USDA playbook is forthcoming and that “plans will be a little bit dynamic” as they learn more.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The core message for producers is clear: watch your cattle, report early, use treatments wisely and expect targeted movement controls — not blanket shutdowns — if NWS crosses the border.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

This first-of-its-kind facility on U.S. soil will ensure we are not reliant on other countries for sterile flies.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;A sterile fly production facility is a specialized biosecure complex where NWS flies are raised and sterilized using irradiation and then released into targeted areas.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;USDA currently produces about 100 million sterile flies per week at the

The new facility at Moore Air Base will be the only U.S.-based sterile fly production facility and will work in tandem with facilities in Panama and Mexico to help eradicate the pest and protect American agriculture.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;USDA and USACE will break ground on this new facility later this spring, after initial planning and development meetings with the new contractor. By November 2027, the production facility at Moore Air Base is expected to reach its initial goal of producing 100 million sterile flies per week. He says the highest losses occurred where there were no nearby wheat fields or safe pasture alternatives for the cattle.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“When you have contiguous grass for 90 miles, and the fire line was 90 miles long, from Beaver, Okla. to Protection, Kan., and it was moving 70 miles an hour, it’s hard to get in front of it,” he says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He also explains because of the good moisture in 2025 and good stewardship of the land, there was a lot of tall, dense forage to fuel the fire.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Many of the best stewards — those who don’t overgraze and stockpile grass for calving and drought management — actually experienced some of the worst damage,” he explains. “Because they’ve done a good job of managing their grass and have forage to eat in the spring of the year before the growing season starts to calve on, they experienced some of the greatest damage.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Spare says the Ranger Road Fire took the same path as the Starbuck Fire, but it did not burn as many acres in Kansas — about one-third less in comparison.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“The good thing is it did not go north of Ashland. It’s five miles south of Ashland before it starts and not near the acreage burned,” he summarizes. “Since it isn’t like the Starbuck Fire, we have an opportunity as neighbors to help neighbors, whereas before we couldn’t do that because we were all affected.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He predicts producers in Kansas lost 1,000 to 1,100 head. He adds there will continue to be more loss as producers evaluate cattle condition.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“One of the biggest damage is feet,” he explains. “The walls of their hooves start to fall off due to the fire. And sometimes that doesn’t show up for five days.”&lt;br&gt;

Many of the ranching operations affected need time to truly assess their losses. Some are finding cattle they first thought to be lost, alive and safe.       <title>The Asian Longhorn Tick Moves West to Kansas</title>

        The Asian longhorn tick (ALHT) has now been

        . The tick was submitted to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for identification after being found on a dog in Franklin County last week. This represents the western most occurrence of the tick; it was last found in Iowa in June, 2025.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;ALHT was first identified in the U.S. in 2017 in New Jersey. Since then it has gradually spread westward and has been documented in 21 states 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/cattle/ticks/asian-longhorned/asian-longhorned-tick-what-you-need-know" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;according to USDA&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        .&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;These ticks are a threat to both human and animal health. ALTH are known to carry Theileria, a protozoan parasite that infects red and white blood cells. Theileria can lead to anemia and even death. Typically, cattle affected by Theileriosis will show signs of lethargy and difficulty breathing.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Because the female tick can reproduce without a male and lay up to 2,000 eggs at a time, a single tick can lead to a major infestation on a single animal leading to reduced growth and production, and, in the most severe cases, death from blood loss.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Cattle producers should be on high alert for external parasites on their animals. While their activity might decrease in the winter months, the ALTH can survive for up to six months off an animal and is tolerant of the cold.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For more information on the ALHT, check out:&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Nichols’ work focuses on the One Health concept.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“One Health is recognizing the health and well-being of humans, of animals and our environment are all interconnected,” she explains. “One Health is something that many of us do every single day and are very, very aware of, especially if you have ties to agriculture and the land. But One Health as a concept oftentimes is difficult to fully understand.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Nichols says One Health is:&lt;br&gt;&lt;ul class="rte2-style-ul"&gt;&lt;li&gt;Ongoing relationships with animal agencies.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Understand the culture of agriculture.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Having access to integrated human and animal surveillance.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Protocols for conducting joint response investigations.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Agreements for sharing biological samples and lab results.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Established lines of communication with agriculture and animal industry.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Plans for unified communication messaging.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Need to build linkages and trust before and outbreak.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;“What happens in one area can significantly impact others — whether it’s a wildfire, a disease outbreak or environmental changes,” Nichols summarizes.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Pandemic and Disease Response Insights&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Nichols was a leader in investigating and finding unique solutions for the livestock industry and specifically meat packing industry related to COVID-19.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“In April 2020, I got a call from my supervisor saying there are some meat, poultry packing plants that are going down because of labor shortages and illness,” she explains. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She selected and lead a team to figure out how to get the plants opened back up safely and to find unique solution to deal with the related animal welfare issues.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Summarizing the experiences, Nichols reports the estimated economic cost of COVID-19 is $14 trillion. Along with supply chain disruptions the industry experienced changes in consumer behavior, labor shortage and complex operations challenges. On a positive note, she says the industry did experience a lot of innovation and uptake of technology due to the pandemic, which resulted in innovative approaches to workplace safety and communication.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We saw innovative strategies where if one person got sick, they looked around that worker and said, ‘OK, who do we need to monitor quickly for symptoms?’” she says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Nichols also discussed the increase in salmonella outbreaks during the pandemic. She links the rise to the increase in backyard poultry ownership and the improper handling of backyard chickens.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Many new chicken owners were unaware of disease transmission risks,” she explains.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Nichols also shared insights to H5N1 influenza and emphasized the complexity of tracking and preventing. She highlights the need for integrated, cross-species surveillance and communication strategies.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She also touched on emerging threats, including

Early dection through wound inspections and reporting in livestock.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Sterile Insect Technique (SIT).&lt;/b&gt; Ongoing release of serile male flies to prevent reproduction.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Biosecurity.&lt;/b&gt; Movement control of imported animals and monitoring at entry points.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Public Awareness.&lt;/b&gt; Education for doctors, ranchers, veterinarians and travelers.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Rapid Response Planning.&lt;/b&gt; Multi-agency coordination to contain outbreaks swiftly and deploy sterile flies. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Agricultural Literacy, Communication is Key&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        “Growing up in the middle of nowhere, I also came to understand that not everyone appreciates — or even understands — where their food comes from,” Nichols says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She shared a 1993 study that revealed significant gaps in public knowledge about agriculture. She summarizes understanding food systems involves knowing:&lt;br&gt;&lt;ul class="rte2-style-ul"&gt;&lt;li&gt;Where food comes from.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;How it’s produced.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Its impact on economy, environment and technology.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;Throughout her lecture she shared the importance of transforming complex scientific concepts into engaging, accessible insights that resonate with students, farmers, ranchers and public health professionals alike.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“It doesn’t matter how much information we have if we don’t get it out to the people,” Nichols says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She stresses the importance of agricultural communication specialists in translating scientific information and engaging audiences. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Don’t leave the communications to the scientists,” she says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Nichols emphasizes that agricultural literacy and effective communication are crucial for bridging knowledge gaps and building public understanding of food systems.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She shares this advice for agricultural advocates:&lt;br&gt;&lt;ul class="rte2-style-ul"&gt;&lt;li&gt;Bring agricultural perspective to discussions by speaking up and sharing lived experiences.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Challenge misconceptions with personal stories by focusing on storytelling rather than technical details.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Understand your audience and use relatable language and provide context.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;Nichols stresses the importance of preparedness and collaboration. She explains the importance of local-level discussions and community preparedness, suggesting that some of the most effective emergency preparedness conversations happen “at the coffee house” or during casual community gatherings.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

      <title>Where Animals, Data and Decisions Meet</title>

         at Kansas State University.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Dr. Megin Nichols, DVM, MPH, DACVPM, director of the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne and Environmental Diseases in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.cdc.gov/ncezid/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        , will speak on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in McCain Auditorium. Farm Journal is the exclusive media partner of the lecture series.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Her talk, titled &lt;i&gt;“&lt;/i&gt;Where Animals, Data and Decisions Meet: A One Health Journey,&lt;i&gt;”&lt;/i&gt; will explore the often-invisible thread that connects human health, animal populations and the environment. Admission is free and organizers say the lecture will be streamed live online.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;One Health is CDC’s collaborative, multi-sectoral and transdisciplinary approach aimed at achieving optimal health outcomes for Americans by recognizing the connection between people, animals, plants and their shared environment.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“If you were to scan the newspaper on any given day,” Nichols says, “you’re likely to see something related to zoonotic diseases — diseases that can jump from animals to humans. These affect our health, our food supply, and even our economy.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;It’s a subject Nichols has studied for decades, and one she says touches every person, whether they know it or not.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She points to recent examples like highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1), which disrupted both poultry and dairy industries while raising public health alarms; and the northward spread of 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.drovers.com/topics/new-world-screwworm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;New World screwworm,&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
         a parasitic fly that threatens livestock.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“These are everyday issues,” Nichols says. “And by understanding how these outbreaks happen, we can prevent future ones. That’s the heart of One Health.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Understanding zoonotic diseases&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        The term ‘zoonotic’ may be unfamiliar to some, but the concept is ancient — and personal, says Nichols, who grew up in rural New Mexico.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“My parents used to tell me, ‘Don’t go near that animal burrow; there might be fleas,’” she recalls. “They were teaching me basic zoonotic prevention before I even knew the word.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Zoonotic diseases are caused by germs that can spread between animals and people through viruses, bacteria, parasites and even fungi. Nichols says about 60% of all known infectious diseases in humans come from animals, and three out of four emerging diseases originate in animals.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“That includes everything from E. coli to plague,” she says. “We still have plague in New Mexico, transmitted by fleas on rodents. These aren’t just things of the past.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Risks to health and economy&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Zoonotic diseases don’t just threaten human health; they can upend economies.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We saw egg prices spike during avian influenza outbreaks,” Nichols says. “Milk production dropped when H5N1 hit dairy herds. These impacts ripple through supply chains, affecting consumers and producers alike.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;More concerning, she adds, is the potential for some of these pathogens to jump to people and cause outbreaks of their own — a sobering reminder that protecting animal health is often the first step to protecting human health.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Prevention: From barnyard to boardroom&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        When it comes to prevention, Nichols says there are simple steps every person can take — like washing hands after being around animals, cooking meat thoroughly, and using bug repellent to avoid bites from ticks, fleas and mosquitoes that can carry disease.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Today, we have a real opportunity to translate science into public health communication, strategy, education and innovations that help us be better prepared to manage these diseases,” Nichols says. “We’re at a really exciting time in our history where we have laboratory techniques like whole genome sequencing to look at the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other organisms that infect us, and learn more about them.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She adds that new technology can help to reduce the risk of transmission, such as a real-time traceability system that can help monitor disease in livestock. Innovations in facility design can also reduce risk — especially in places like petting zoos.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“You can still let kids interact with animals, but we can design safer spaces where they aren’t putting their hands and mouths on contaminated railings,” she says. “It’s about smart interaction.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Role of NBAF and K-State&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Nichols says she’s particularly excited to speak in Manhattan, a hub of animal health research that includes the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) — the first U.S. facility with Biosafety Level 4 containment for livestock.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“NBAF is operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and plays a critical role in diagnosing emerging diseases, developing vaccines, and protecting food and public health,” she explains.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;K-State, while not managing NBAF, is deeply involved through education and research, training students and professionals to be on the front lines of disease detection.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We rely on that first line of defense — the veterinarian, the family physician — to say, ‘Wait a second, I’ve seen this before,’” Nichols says. “That early detection can save lives.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Looking to the Future&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Though the Oct. 6 lecture will include students, researchers, and community members, Nichols says her message is meant for everyone.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“One Health is about understanding that our health is deeply connected to the animals and the environment around us,” she says. “And the more perspectives we bring — whether from agriculture, medicine, or public communication — the stronger we are when we face new threats.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She adds: “Mentorship is key. We need to prepare the next generation of scientists, veterinarians, doctors, and communicators to face diseases we haven’t even imagined yet. And that starts by having conversations like the one we’ll have in Manhattan.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;K-State established 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.k-state.edu/research/global-food/events/lecture-series" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;the Henry C. Gardiner Global Food Systems lecture series&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;

         ALT has not been found in Kansas but has been found in Missouri, Arkansas and in Oklahoma most recently in the county adjacent to Labette County, Kan.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The disease can be spread through multiuse needles and insect vectors.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;KSVDL reports the infected calves in the case were purchased on the East coast and imported into Kansas for feeding.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;If you are witnessing any of these clinical signs in cattle of all ages — anorexia, lethargy, dyspnea, icterus or death — please consider this new pathogen.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;KSVDL also stresses producers need to be wary of importing cattle without testing for this disease. KSVDL has a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (MDL7130) that identifies both Anaplasma and Theileria. As with all PCR’s, whole blood (purple top tube) is the appropriate antemortem sample. Fresh spleen is the appropriate postmortem sample.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

Ty Lawrence, West Texas A&amp;amp;M University animal science professor and director of the BCRC, predicts that carcass weights will continue to increase, potentially reaching 1,500 lb. in the near future.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Lawrence was a keynote speaker during the 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://BIFSymposium.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;2025 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Symposium&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
         in Amarillo last week. He says the industry has already seen harvests of cattle approaching that weight, with some producers currently feeding cattle up to 2,300 lb.&lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt;“We can feed cattle today to much bigger weights and be more profitable than you’ve ever considered,” Lawrence says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;BIF attendee and Kansas beef producer Joe Epperly from Wamego, Kan., summarizes, “The most hard-hitting comment at BIF was Lawrence’s 1,500-lb. carcass prediction by the end of his career. The implications of that to genetic selection, cost of production and cow size are far ranging. It will be a challenge for producers in every segment to meet.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;More than 400 beef producers, breed association leaders and industry professionals participated in two and a half days of educational programming focused on beef industry profitability and sustainability.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Tuesday, June 10, the event kicked off with the Young Producer Symposium. Wednesday’s general session focused on “Beef Industry Profitability: Conflicting market signals and profit drivers in the beef value chain.” Thursday’s general session theme was “Sustainability: Improving our product through selection, applications of technology and data integration.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Wednesday and Thursday afternoon technical breakout sessions focused on a range of beef-production and genetic-improvement topics.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Bradley Wolter, a symposium attendee from Aviston, Ill., says, “Larger carcasses will be a critical part of bridging the supply gap in the near term. Identifying genetic association with late-term mortality and morbidity requires further research and coordination on the part of breeding entities.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He says the chasm remains between exponentially larger finished carcasses that optimize fixed packer costs verses a target of smaller cows for biological optimum on the ranch.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“More collaborative, holistic data analysis with integrated research is needed to avoid industry sub-optimization and ensure competitiveness on the world stage,” Wolter summarizes.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Scott Greiner, Virginia Tech professor and Extension animal scientist, agrees with Epperly and Walter saying the message that resonated with many in attendance was the continued emphasis on increasing carcass weights by the feedlot and packing sectors, and the impact it will have at the cow-calf sector as it relates to cow size and production costs.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“This trend is not new, but I think the way things were conveyed by several speakers in terms of the economics and market signals, sure seems like bigger is what will continue to be a primary emphasis,” Greiner says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Ken Odde, 2025/26 BIF vice president from South Dakota, says: “Two of the real questions about feeding cattle this long [to 1500-lb carcass weight] is what happens to the carcass traits as you do that? What happens to feed efficiency?”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;One of the sessions that stood out to Odde during the symposium was a presentation on a project at South Dakota State University in the Advancements in End Product Improvement breakout session — “Extended days on feed: Influences on growth performance, efficiency and carcass characteristics of steers and heifers of different proportions of Angus and Limousin genetics.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt; &lt;b&gt;Is the U.S. Behind?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        “From conversations in the hallway, I learned that the U.S. beef industry is behind on methane research, and if we are going to compete in the global marketplace, we need to get a move on,” Epperly says. “Australian Angus will release a methane research EPD in 2025, and we have barely enough data in the U.S. to see differences. That Australian data includes a lot of American bulls, so we will have data whether some American breeders like it or not. The optics for some are unfavorable, but whatever we can do to keep the doors open for our product the better off we will be.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Likewise, symposium speakers referenced the Brazilian beef industry and how it is poised for continued success and rapid growth given its bountiful resources, not the least of which is its people.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“You see it not only in its scaled adoption of AI, but through the numerous young geneticists who make up the audience,” Walter says. “The U.S. industry needs to continue to invest in its genetic improvement through both public and private partnerships to maintain a position of world leadership.” &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Young Producer Focus&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        “The Young Producer Symposium opened with a message about ‘Standing on the shoulders of giants,’” says Elizabeth Dressler, a graduate student who attended the symposium. “This resonated with me as I thought about all the research and progress the beef industry has made over the years. I thought it was a great way to open the conference by paying respect to the work that has been done in the past, as we look into the future the rest of the conference.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Wolter adds there’s an excitement among young people in the beef industry.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“These young leaders are creatively engaged with our consumers unlike the previous generation,” he says. “I believe that will only create more demand and opportunities for an industry despite some questions and uncertainties with how cattle interact with their environment.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Other Key Topics&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Wolter shares these other key topics discussed in the meeting rooms and hallways during BIF 2025.&lt;br&gt;&lt;ol class="rte2-style-ol" start="1"&gt;&lt;li&gt;The beef-on-dairy supply chain is in the process of redefining production planning, execution and realization. The more aligned production systems will improve consumer outcomes and establish new baselines for production efficiency.&lt;br&gt;“Traditional beef-on-beef production systems must be learning from these efforts to capture more value from its traditional supply chain,” he says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The U.S. genetic improvement infrastructure must find a way to collect more commercial phenotypes within the supply chain. &lt;br&gt;“We need to characterize our genetics where the improvement in most needed,” he explains.&lt;br&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The industry needs to continue to understand consumer expectations for the role of ruminants in the environment.&lt;br&gt;“More productive dialog among industry participants is needed to determine paths of response forward,” he summarizes.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Attending the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Symposium always feels like a bit of a family reunion,” says Troy Rowan, University of Tennessee assistant professor of beef cattle genomics. “There’s no other meeting that brings producers, academics, Extension and industry together in the same way around a set of common goals.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Rowan says the beef industry is in a unique situation right now, and the BIF program was a perfect response to those conditions and the role that genetics can play in shaping the future.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We talked about cow-calf/carcass antagonisms and opportunities, supply chains, sustainability, data capture, AI (both artificial insemination and artificial intelligence), and most importantly, how we continue to use genetics to drive producer profitability,” he summarizes.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Watch

        High winds and dry conditions resulted in multiple wildfires in western Kansas on Wednesday. At least a dozen homes burned and at least three people were hospitalized. Fires were reported in Sheridan, Trego, Ellis, Russell, Osborne, and Rooks County. Fires were also reported in other counties.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Ranchers in Oklahoma and Texas also suffered wildfires on Wednesday. Portions of Guymon, Okla., were evacuated Wednesday afternoon as crews battled wildfires on the edge town. Texas reported at least five wildfires Wednesday.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;This storm stands out for the record-setting warmth that fueled it, the number of reports of destructive winds it generated and for spreading severe thunderstorms, including tornadoes, farther north than previously observed in December.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        At times, the winds gusted more than 100 mph in parts of Kansas, stoking wildfires from the Great Plains to the Missouri River Valley.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Across Kansas, the winds limited visibility and sent semitractor-trailers weaving. Interstate 70 and a handful of other highways in western Kansas were closed down for hours.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In Russell County in central Kansas, wildfires burned into the night, prompting evacuations in Waldo, Paradise and Fairport, and destroying multiple homes. Crews in the town of Russell worked through the night to restore power.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The wildfires prompted the Kansas Livestock Association and other ag groups to begin coordinating donations of feed, fencing supplies and cash for affected ranchers. The bulk of the acres burned are within the counties of Russell, Osborne, Rooks and Ellis. Ranchers in the hardest hit areas lost fence, livestock and feed resources, KLA said. Ranch homes and outbuildings also were among the losses. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Heartland Regional Stockyards at Plainville will serve as a collection and distribution point for hay and supplies. Russell Livestock also is taking hay donations. All proceeds will be used to help those affected by the recent weather event. Laura Kelly. “Prepositioning firefighting personnel and equipment in western Kansas along with those assets responding will allow our aviation assets to quickly respond and keep Kansans safe. Local responders work heroically to respond when wildland fires threaten their communities and the state stands ready to back them up, if needed.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Much of Kansas is recovering from yesterday’s storms and wildland fires,” said Mark Neely with the Kansas Forest Service. “The Kansas Forest Service is working with state and local partners to get fires under control and mopped up so that we can return to normal conditions.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
