Panel of beef industry experts to speak November 8th on antibiotic issues

A panel of beef industry professionals that cover all aspects of the supply chain will speak on the evolving issue of antibiotic use, management changes and consumer preference.

The lecture titled "What's Your Beef? Antibiotic issues in modern beef production" will be addressed by four industry experts from across the country:

  • John Butler, is the CEO of the Beef Marketing Group
  • Lora Wright, is the Beef Supply Chain Division Manager, Office of Animal Well-Being and Food Safety Quality Assurance for Tyson Fresh Meats
  • Mike Apley is a Professor of Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine
  • Dennis Hecker is the Senior Vice President Quality Assurance at Wendy's International

The issue of antibiotic use in modern animal production has increased in popularity as the consumer continues to request more information on where their food comes from and how it is raised. Antibiotic resistance is a hot topic in the minds of many Americans and the roll that farmers and ranchers play in the issue.

The panel will share their thoughts on antibiotics and production challenges that producers face with increased regulations on antibiotic use. As new labels hit the marketplace, it is important that the consumer understands what these claims mean and how they effect the supply chain from producer to the packer to the retailer. These respected experts will share their experiences in an ever changing industry, offer solutions, and answer thought provoking questions about the future animal production industry and antibiotic use.

The discussion will begin at 4 p.m.

in Forum Hall in the K-State Student Union. Admission is free.

This is the 13th installment in the Upson Lecture Series, endowed by the Kansas State University Classes of 1962 and 1966. Food for Thought, a student organization at Kansas State, organizes the lecture series. The event will be live tweeted using the hash tag #ULSBeefPanel.
