Pulmotil® (tilmicosin) is an innovative bovine respiratory disease (BRD) treatment for groups of cattle in the early stages of an outbreak that provides 14 days of sustained in-feed therapy, a practice that reduces stress associated with cattle handling. Ideal for cattle not requiring metaphylaxis treatment on arrival and/or when labor resources are limited, feeding Pulmotil means fewer pulls and less individual animal management.
Since the initial approval of Pulmotil in 2011, Elanco has been working with veterinarians and nutritionists to provide training on the VFD process and conduct further research trials. Pulmotil is now widely available to commercial operations, and we want to ensure you have the information you need to evaluate Pulmotil, develop appropriate protocols, answer client questions and fulfill the requirements for issuing a VFD.
For a brief introduction to Pulmotil, review the Pulmotil Overview Brochure. The brochure discusses the benefits of Pulmotil, research demonstrating its efficacy and the process for implementing a veterinary feed directive (VFD). For more in-depth information, the Pulmotil User Guide has been developed to help you understand the Pulmotil label, and explain how to initiate a VFD and implement a Pulmotil control program. Further directions for planning and preparation, feeding and mixing, and other helpful information are also included. Your Elanco representative or technical consultant can provide you with a copy of the Pulmotil User Guide.
Four studies1 were conducted to collect data for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration registration and approval of Pulmotil in cattle and to demonstrate the efficacy of Pulmotil. At the completion of the studies, the number of calves classified as healthy was greater in Pulmotil-fed calves compared to a control group, 67.3% vs. 49.2% (P = 0.03). A summary of this research can be found in the Pulmotil Tech Report.
The VFD Quick-Start Checklist provides step-by-step instructions for completing a VFD form. The checklist also provides formulas and a reference chart for calculating feed intake and grams per ton, and includes a sample VFD form. VFD form pads of 50 can be ordered through your Elanco representative.
