Recently, Dr. Dave Rhoda discussed the WVMA award-winning treatment protocol work with a group of beef and dairy producers at the Cattle Industry Annual Convention. Dr. Rhoda shared the WVMA program which addresses drug use on dairies and encourages dairy producers to have a “mindset shift” when it comes to treatment protocols.

Maas named BQA Educator of the Year
Dr. John Maas, DVM, University of California–Davis, is known throughout the beef industry for his passion for animal health and the checkoff-funded Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program. Recently, he was honored as the 2013 Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Educator of the Year. Maas is an integral part of the BQA program, serving in state and national leadership roles, including the BQA Advisory Board.

BQA launches new campaign
In the coming months, at your local auction market, you may see posters and displays for the new Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) residue avoidance campaign, Control residues. Every animal, every time. The communications effort was created to build awareness of the checkoff-funded BQA program and its residue avoidance guidelines.

NBQA Results Revealed
The beef industry has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. Yet, in each National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA) the objective has remained the same: to measure industry progress on production issues that affect beef quality and, ultimately, consumer demand for beef. Today, the opportunities for our industry to make quality improvements are significant – in fact, the most recent 2011 NBQA, found that nearly $44 per head was “left on the table” due to lost quality opportunities.

Veterinarian relationship key to success

Dee Griffin – BQA pioneer and leader
Dee Griffin, DVM, University of Nebraska – Lincoln, was recently honored as the 2012 Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Educator of the Year. “Dee Griffin has been pivotal in the development and maintenance of the Beef Quality Assurance program,” says Bob Bohlender, DVM, North Platte, Nebr. “He has a passion for beef safety and beef quality that very few people could muster.”

Protocols key to proper use

Lessons learned
John Maas, UC-Davis extension veterinarian, BQA Advisory Board member and cattleman was the perfect candidate to take the newly released BQA Cow-Calf Assessment to the field and find its practical applications for veterinarians and cattle producers. This past summer, he conducted his own four-ranch practicum in California.
