Ron Gill, PhD, Texas A&M University, offers these 10 principles of cattle handling:
- The only way to work cattle quickly is slowly.
- Work from front to draw cattle to you.
- Apply pressure when cattle have a place to go.
- Pressure from the side.
- Cattle have to be comfortable going by you and staying straight.
- Use pressure from behind only when absolutely necessary.
- When working cattle, move in triangles.
- Going with the flow of cattle slows or stops movement.
- Going against the flow initiates or accelerates movement.
- Cattle work best when they are ready; your job is to get them ready.
