AVMA AVMA supports new legislation to combat animal & human disease
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) applauds new legislation introduced on Capitol Hill that could help stop the next outbreak of avian influenza or foot-and-mouth disease by providing a more stable flow of resources for the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), which monitors animal-borne illnesses that pose significant threats to animal and public health. The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) announces that the prestigious 2013 Borlaug CAST Communication Award goes to Jeff Simmons, the President of Elanco. Simmons was nominated by colleagues from several industry and nonprofit organizations based on his passion for finding solutions for world hunger. The gap between animal-agriculture and consumer perceptions of food production continues to grow, and we need to communicate better with the general public. Most participants at last week’s Animal Agriculture Alliance Stakeholder Summit would agree with that statement.
