Codex moves ahead with ractopamine standards
At the Codex meeting, taking place this week iin Rome, participating member countries expressed their views on the safety of ractopamine. On Thursday, the member countries voted in favor of the adoption of standards for Maximum Residue Levels for ractopamine. According to NCBA Chief Veterinarian Kathy Simmons, this is a victory for U.S. cattlemen and women.

Animal Disease Center produces vaccine against FMD
A new vaccine had been developed for one of the seven strains of the dreaded foot-and-mouth disease. "This is the biggest news in FMD research in the last 50 years," says Dr. Larry Barrett, Plum Island Animal Disease Center director.

Mark Hilton, DVM, Dipl. ABVP, Purdue University, is getting a lot of calls from producers on what and how to feed cows during the drought.Hilton says producers need to conserve forage during the drought so they won’t have to buy hay in January. He recommends getting cows off pastures now.

Trich still a concern
Testing for trichomoniasis in bulls usually takes place earlier in the spring, but the consequences of trich-positive bulls is lasting. Though producers seem to be doing a better job identifying trich-positive bulls, in 2012 there have been several cases reported in different states.
