As spring storms raced across the Midwest over the last weekend in April, a single lightning strike apparently killed 32 dairy cows on a farm near Cabool, in Texas County, Missouri.
The farm’s owner, Jared Blackwelder, says he saw the huge flash of a nearby lightning strike shortly after milking his herd early Saturday morning. Later, he returned to find the 32 cows dead in the pasture.
Pictures of the tragedy have circulated worldwide and generated extensive coverage on social media.
According to news reports, Blackwelder has around 120 cows remaining on the dairy, and plans to replace the animals killed over the weekend. The dairy is USDA certified for organic production and markets milk through the Organic Valley Coop.
