Producers, veterinarians and nutritionists have a new online tool for registering complaints about suspected problems with livestock feed.
The Livestock Food Reporting portal is the latest addition to the Safety Reporting Portal, an online system designed to streamline the process of reporting product safety issues to the FDA and the National Institutes of Health. Manufacturers, distributors, retailers and public health officials at the federal, state and local level should continue to use the Reportable Food section of the Safety Reporting Portal.
FDA encourages anyone with concerns about animal feed to file a report, including veterinarians and livestock producers. In addition to the online portal, FDA’s District Office consumer complaint coordinators will continue to accept reports via phone.
On its website, the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) offers instructions on how to report a livestock food complaint and the types of information to provide.
CVM reminds producers and others to retain original feed packaging until the product is used up. The packaging contains information often needed to identify the variety of food, the manufacturing plant, and the production date. For products delivered in bulk, information may be included on the bill of lading, receipt, or invoice.
Anyone issuing a complaint should have detailed information ready, including the exact name of the product, product description, type of container, lot number, best by, best before or expiration date, UPC code, net weight, purchase date and location. Complainants also should provide results of any laboratory tests performed on the product or on animals, information on how the product was stored, prepared, and handled and a description of the problem.
