This year’s winner of AABP’s Practitioner of the Year award, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc., is Frank Schenkels, DVM, of Fundy Veterinarians in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. The award honors a veterinarian in active practice who is active in organized veterinary medicine and who has made significant contributions to bovine medicine.   

Schenkels graduated from Ontario Veterinary College in 1986 and practiced briefly in Peterborough, Ontario before moving to Nova Scotia. He has been with Fundy Vets since 1987 and practicing large animal medicine since then with a major interest in dairy practice. He has become known for his work toward improving cow well-being, food safety and controlling Johne’s disease.

Schenkels graduated from the Dairy Health Management Certificate Program in 1994. He is a member of American Association of Bovine Practitioners and the National Mastitis Council. He is a founding member of the Atlantic Bovine Practitioners Association a past president of the Canadian Association of Bovine Pracitioners.

Schenkels lives in Fort Ellis, Nova Scotia with his wife Luanne, their sons Aiden and Jared, and daughter Marika.
