Corn Stalk grazing on GMO vs no-GMO corn. There have been reports on either side of this discussion. What are observations from ranchers and farmers this year. Is Refuge grazed differently by the cows? Are there any observations upon first entering a herd of cows into a field? Do they gleam selectively? What are some of the grazing patterns from cows and heifers or stockers?

Greetings my friend. I am not sure if you will remember me, but I used to be in private practice in DeWitt, Iowa. Purdue University researchers looked at this question a few years ago and cows do spend more time grazing non-GMO corn residue. It has nothing to do with palatability of the residue, but is due to more dropped ears in the non-GMO corn. After a few days the cows learned that there was more corn on the non-GMO side of the field, so they spent more time there. When the stalk bales were fed from both GMO and non-GMO crn, the intakes were identical.
