The Center for Food Integrity (CFI) has scheduled a pair of webinars to help professional and consumer audiences better understand food production and address some of the common misconceptions or concerns. The webinars will take place this Thursday, September 12, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. CDT.
The 3:00 session, titled Tough Questions on Foods, will engage experts including a biotechnologist, a food scientist, a farmer, a registered dietitian and a veterinarian.
This session is intended for health and nutrition-focused individuals and will provide participants with direct access to food-industry experts. Some questions already received include processed foods, antibiotic and hormone use in livestock, and genetically modified foods. The later session at 7 p.m. CDT is intended for consumers. The webinar, titled True? Or Not? Your Food Questions, Expert Answers, which will cover the top questions consumers ask about food.
Carolyn O'Neil, MS, RD, an award-winning author and nutritionist, will present the questions and responses from food experts from around the country. The top 10 questions identified for the session are:
- Are fresh fruits and vegetables better than canned and frozen produce?
- Are fruits and vegetables sprayed with pesticides less safe than organic produce?
- Is real cane sugar healthier than other sweeteners?
- Can most people benefit from a gluten-free diet?
- Are processed foods unhealthy?
- Do hormones in milk, meat and eggs cause early puberty?
- Are GM Foods safe?
- Are those who follow a plant-based diet (vegetarians and vegans) more healthy than people who eat meat, dairy and/or eggs?
- Has antibiotic use in cattle, pigs and chickens led to increased antibiotic resistance in humans eating meat products?
- Are organic foods healthier for me?
