A traveling exhibit built out of an 18-wheel truck is traveling around Chicago to connect people with animals and generate interest in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.
A tour through the “Animal Connections: Our Journey Together” exhibit uses interactive experiences, videos and displays. Visitors are taken through five sections: animals in the home, on the farm, at the zoo and in the wild, as well as the role veterinarians play in each of these. A virtual veterinary clinic in the exhibit tests participant’s diagnostic skills in the role of a veterinarian.
The collaboration was initiated by the American Veterinary Medical Association as part of its 150th anniversary. The Smithsonian institution and Zoetis assisted in creating the 1,000-square-foot exhibit.
The exhibit launched Tuesday at the Museum Campus near the Shedd Aquarium and will continue displays around the Chicago Park District through August 9. The exhibit will also travel to New York City and Washington, D.C. this year, with a nationwide tour slated to begin in 2014.
