Veterinary students urge Congress to act on education issues

From the ever-increasing weight of student loans on the backs of young professionals to the lack of veterinary services across America’s rural communities, nearly 70 veterinary students had a lot to say when they met with their legislators this week in the nation’s capital as part of AVMA’s 2015 Legislative Fly-in.

Funding bill includes completion of NBAF

It appears the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) will receive the $300 million in federal funding needed to complete construction in Manhattan, Kansas. After a contentious fight over the Obama Administration’s immigration policy, the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday voted 257 to 167 in favor of the $40 billion bill, which finds the Department of Homeland Security, including $300 million for the NBAF.

McDonald’s to curtail antibiotic use

McDonald’s this week announced a plan to source poultry raised without antibiotics important to human medicine. At the same time, the company also introduced its Global Vision for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Food Animals, which implies McDonald’s will, over time, extend similar policies to its beef, dairy and pork supply chains.

Emergency preparedness one bite at a time

Early recognition and rapid response to a foreign animal disease (FAD) are critical to mitigating the toll it takes, according to Dr. Justin Smith, deputy animal health commissioner for the Kansas Department of Agriculture. That is why he and other animal health and emergency preparedness personnel, including Sandy Johnson, the department’s emergency management coordinator, are dedicating time to travel the state of Kansas to meet with stakeholders about the state’s FAD response plan. “Knowing what to do and practicing is so important,” Johnson says about the state’s plan.
