When is the best time for veterinarians to locomotion score dairy cattle?

It can depend on the dairy and the availability of assistance, but veterinary experts at Washington State University offer these three opportunities to do a quick check on locomotion score prevalence on a dairy:

  • During herd check or a time when the cows are locked-up, have an assistant release every nth cow for you to locomotion score.
  • Watch cows as they exit the milking parlor and record locomotion score of every nth cow.
  • Walk through the pens, counting cows (both lying down and standing) in the order that you see them, and locomotion score every nth cow.
