John Maday of Vance Publishing joins Vets Plus for Speaker Series

Vets Plus, Inc. welcomed John Maday on Friday, May 22, to discuss trends in cattle production and veterinary practice. Maday is editor of Bovine Veterinarian and managing editor of Drovers / CattleNetwork. Maday spoke to a group of about 30 staff members from all departments at Vets Plus.

Wet pastures and foot rot

Spring rains have filled the ponds and now the summer grass is ready to start growing vigorously. As the temperatures heat up, cattle will start to congregate around or in the ponds or other standing water. One of the challenges that cattle producers may face this summer is the occasional lame cow or yearling. “Foot rot” is a common cause of lameness in beef cattle on pastures. Foot rot is an infection that starts between the toes of the infected animal and usually is a result of the introduction of a bacteria through broken skin.


FDA Releases Draft Guidance determining an acute reference dose

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a draft guidance to help animal drug sponsors determine an acute reference dose (ARfD), which is the estimate of the amount of residues expressed on a body weight basis that can be ingested in a period of no more than 24 hours or less without adverse effects or harm to the health of the human consumer.


Zinpro announces veterinary scholarship winner

Zinpro Corporation recently awarded its 2015 Zinpro/Schugel Scholarship to Katie Sielaff, a student at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. She is a member of the class of 2016 and hails from Greenleaf, Wisconsin.


OIE cuts six European countries' BSE risk level

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Wednesday it had lowered to the safest level the official risk of six countries for mad cow disease, a move expected to open international market access for their beef exports.
