The “40 Under 40” award program absolutely should include several bovine veterinarians in its list of honorees this year, and you can help make it happen.

Last year, Vance Publishing (the parent company of Bovine Veterinarian, Dairy Herd Management and Drovers/Cattle Network) initiated the program to recognize young leaders from across the agricultural community who are helping advance food production to meet future demands. From a long list of nominees, our panel of independent judges selected the top 40, all under 40 years of age, who we recognized in our magazines, on our websites and at industry events.

Last year’s honorees are an outstanding group, including livestock and crop producers, scientists, marketers and managers. However, a key group of influential leaders was missing from the list – bovine veterinarians. Industry surveys consistently identify veterinarians as the most respected and influential resource people for farmers and ranchers, and scores of our young veterinarians deserve to be honored in the 40 Under 40 program. I can think of several deserving veterinarians right off, but as a Vance employee involved in the program, I am not eligible to nominate candidates.

I’m sure many of our readers know a young beef or dairy veterinarian who brings fresh talent, motivation, vision and leadership to the livestock community. So please, take a little time – it won’t take long – to nominate that veterinarian. The July 31 deadline is approaching rapidly. Let’s make sure the veterinary profession is well represented in the 2014 40 Under 40 class of honorees. Thank you.
