AVMA welcomes release of federal rule focused on the judicious use of antibiotics in food animals

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) today applauded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its release of the Veterinary Feed Directive final rule, which will cement veterinary oversight of medically important antibiotics used in feed for food animals, ensuring the protection of animal health and welfare as well as food safety and public health.


Forum draws ‘antibiotic stewardship’ commitments

The Obama Administration convened a “White House Forum on Antibiotic Stewardship” on June 2, bringing together key human and animal health constituencies to discuss the development, promotion and implementation of activities to ensure the responsible use of antibiotics.


John Maday of Vance Publishing joins Vets Plus for Speaker Series

Vets Plus, Inc. welcomed John Maday on Friday, May 22, to discuss trends in cattle production and veterinary practice. Maday is editor of Bovine Veterinarian and managing editor of Drovers / CattleNetwork. Maday spoke to a group of about 30 staff members from all departments at Vets Plus.

Wet pastures and foot rot

Spring rains have filled the ponds and now the summer grass is ready to start growing vigorously. As the temperatures heat up, cattle will start to congregate around or in the ponds or other standing water. One of the challenges that cattle producers may face this summer is the occasional lame cow or yearling. “Foot rot” is a common cause of lameness in beef cattle on pastures. Foot rot is an infection that starts between the toes of the infected animal and usually is a result of the introduction of a bacteria through broken skin.
