FAO urges support for animal disease monitoring

Calling animal disease a “weak link” in global efforts to combat disease, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) called for sustained monitoring of animal diseases, particularly those that can cross species barriers to infect humans.

USDA predicts record ag exports for 2014

In the February Agricultural Trade Outlook report from USDA, the department boosts its forecast for U.S. agricultural exports for fiscal 2014 to a record $142.6 billion. Anticipated demand for grain and feed exports account for most of the increase, with exports of livestock, poultry, and dairy products projected to be down $200 million to $31.6 billion. Beef and dairy, however, are the bright spots in the category with projected increases.

Study indicates better convergence in grain markets

During the years from 200 through 2011, grain traders noticed wider-than-usual discrepancies between futures and cash prices for wheat, corn and soybeans. This “non-convergence” created concerns over the viability of those futures contracts as price-discovery and risk-management tools.
