Come down from your skyscraper, get some good old-fashioned fresh air in America's heartland, and talk to some folks in the agriculture industry who are producing our food, instead of taking the easy way out with celebrities looking to advance their next movie, cookbook or TV show. New research at annual Beef Safety Summit
The essential oils in orange peel and pulp kill E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella, according to research presented at the 2010 Beef Industry Safety Summit. This ongoing study is looking at these natural byproducts, created by making juice, as a potential feed ingredient for cattle. More than 200 experts from every sector of the beef industry met this week in Dallas to share research and identify farm-to-fork solutions for improving beef safety.

2010 estrus synch planner
The Iowa Beef Center has updated its estrus synchronization software. The 2010 revised version of the Estrus Synch Planner will include three new systems just recently approved by the Beef Reproduction Task Force.

Consumers skeptical about food labels
This week, the FDA announced that a survey indicated a majority of consumers read food labels and are increasingly aware of the link between good nutrition and reducing the risk of disease. The 2008 U.S. Health and Diet Survey of more than 2,500 adults from all 50 states and the District of Columbia found that, for the first time, more than half of those surveyed "often" read a label the first time they buy a product. Yet, while the number of consumers reading a food label the first time they buy a product has risen, consumers are skeptical of industry claims such as "low fat," "high fiber" or "cholesterol free" on the front of packages. Senator supports extending COOL to dairy
DariyReporter.com reports Senator Gillibrand's support to extend country-of-origin labeling to dairy products, which Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown presented to Congress last October.
