As calving, pre-breeding and breeding arrives this spring, a refresher on body condition scoring of beef cattle may be wise. Research from New Mexico State University (Mathis et al) indicates that a cow calving in a BCS 5 is a low risk, optimal BCS to target when balancing economics and production. Cows that are too thin or too fat can experience problems with calving, cycling and/or subsequent re-breeding.

Elanco offers this chart on body condition scoring with descriptions for each score.
